Daily Snow: Zugspitze

It took me a while to reveal this guide to one of the most fabulous powderruns in the close vicinity to Munich. Probably also because I spent the last days up at the Zugspitze, riding them myself. Anyway, this is how you get to taste a bit of what the locals call »Klein Kanada« for good reason:

First head to the two longer tie-bar lifts to the south at the Wetterwandeck. You can either cross the steep slope of the Schneeferner or take the regular slope to get there. If you chose to dip straight into the powder, make sure you head far enough to the south before darting down as there are some hidden rocks lurking south the edge or the regular slope. Be aware that the Schneeferner is known for avalanche hazard.

Once you've reached the top at the Wetterwandeck, head to the south and keep to the right of the slope. From here you can either walk up 10 minutes or continue in a hard crossing (try to remain high as possible as below the steep powder is bordered by some cliffs to the north). With enough speed at the end of the steep powder you might be able to cross the evil flats. If not, you will just have to face a sweaty walk in waist deep fluffy powder.

Down here there is a broad area in which you can chose to head for some small rock formation to the right (excellent to jump if there is enough snow) or the steep cliffs to the left. Just keep in mind that you will not see the lift until you are back on the slope, which means that it is easily to pass the exit to the left (often ends into a long hard walk back uphill). If it is your first run here, ensure that you keep to left.

Vom Nebelhorn aus, müsste die Zugspitze in etwa SO aussehen - nur viel kleiner.
