Daily Travel: Not to visit
As I was browsing a book shop yesterday I found a book about 101 Places Not to Visit by Adam Russ. A very good present to anybody who loves travelling. And I mean travelling as in buying a flight ticket, snatching your rucksack and heading for places that do not offer any package tours at all.
So here is my Top 5 of places you do not want to visit:
Denver, USA
Like any other boring city in the mid-west, this one at least has the Rocky Mountains at a close distance. I admit that it is not as bad as Lincoln, Nebraska, but since I was let down on the expectations I had due to Dynasty, this city made it on my list (and the fact that I have never been to Lincoln, Nebraska).
Singapore
This is only a fine city in terms of getting a fine for almost anything. Jaywalking and chewing gums are illegal and except some curious food (fruit that smells like puke and tea with savourless jelly) the city does not differ much from any western high-rise metropolis. The main attraction is Sentosa Island with an artificial beach. Yuck! - what more can I say?
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
There is almost nothing more typical about Dubai then it's show-off of wacky instant sights. Let's be honest. If a city needs to built an island only to sell it as a tourist attraction, it's obvious what else there is to see. It is a good place to buy petrol and gold thou. Afterwards you can go indoor skiing or ride a Venetian gondola for God's sake!
Cape Town, South Africa
This city is heavily over-rated. Apart from the dominating and admittedly beautiful Table Mountain, there is nothing much to see. The harbour is re-built Disney-style and what looks nice for a swim at Camps Bay is freezing cold water directly from Antarctica. The reality looms on the other side of the Table Mountain in form of the Cape Flats as result of decades of oppression.
[edit for Neo-Opa]
If you want to see something nice, head beyond to the Vineyards or the Cape of good Hope. Here it is beautiful but it still remains a rather racist and very unbalanced country and it will take at least one generation to get it off my list.
Cologne, Germany
Except the Dome, there is nothing much to miss. Especially during the all mighty Carneval when everybody has to be jolly. Beer comes in tiny glasses, people talk in an annoying dialect and the weather is crap. But the worst thing is that it is the only city on earth I ever got lost. (Don't cheer if you are from Dusseldorf - your city sucks just as much!)

And which are the cities preferred by you? Except in Cologne I still was in none of the cities specified by you. In Cologne I lived for a while and I must say, it was okay. Nice pubs and restaurants, interesting museums, churches, second-hand bookshops. The city is a little unclear, but nobody is perfect!
