The Karaoke Effect
By Mr. Nilz I was reminded about Karaoke today... you know, that slightly embarrassing fashion of making a fool out of yourself which swept over Europe in the ....err 80's?? Gheez, that makes me feel old.
But of course the last time I took actively part in Karaoke (and I mean not by laughing at others!) is not 25 years ago. Actually I was singing along some vietnamese Songs (and lyrics!!) at my favourite sushi dealer in town just two years ago.
I had not the slightest idea what I was singing about, which is probably the same feeling most of the chinese folks have when they impersonate Frank Sinatra (or worse).
It's a little bit odd that Karaoke is still heavily favoured in Asia while the hype more or less vanished in the rest of the world. Maybe we are already embarrassed enough by various other reasons in the western world?
